National Health Workforce Taskforce

In 2006, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to a significant national health workforce reform package to enable the health workforce to better respond to the evolving care needs of the Australian community, while maintaining the quality and safety of health services.

The COAG package included the establishment of the National Health Workforce Taskforce (NHWT) to undertake projects which would inform development of practical solutions on workforce innovation and reform.

The NHWT was a time limited project based entity tasked to action and coordinate the achievement of agreed COAG requirements.

Specifically, the Taskforce’s job was to develop strategies to meet the National Health Workforce Strategic Framework outcomes which encompassed:

  1. Education and Training
  2. Innovation and Reform
  3. Planning, Research and Data
  4. Secretariat support for the HWPC, its subcommittees and working parties
